If you are working with a recognized pain clinic on an on-going basis and
require replacement of your pain pump due to malfunction or failing battery,
this can be performed in conjunction with your pain clinic. Talk to your
pain physician about this option
If you're experiencing chronic pain from an entrapped nerve, usually as a result
of surgery, this nerve may be able to be frozen, cut and removed. This
generally produces numbness where pain was and allows you to go on without pain.
This surgery is also done in conjunction with a pain physician. This is
generally a permanent solution to chronic pain, but the nerve may regenerate and
reconnect to cause pain again, although this is very unlikely. This is
most successful in patients who are experiencing pain in the groin region due to
inguinal hernia repair.
These surgeries are done on an out-patient basis. If a pump is placed or
replaced, there is always risk of infecting the device which would require
removal and may potentially cause significant illness, although this is very
unlikely.
